Vals AI, an independent AI benchmarking company, reported that a team of Claude Opus 5.5 agents discovered two materials that could improve computer memory via room-temperature semi-conductivity through around 750 computer simulations completed over three days. These materials, YBaMnFeO₅ and KV[Cr(CN)₆], are predicted to balance trade-offs between magnetic polarization switching speed and data retention at room temperature, which could lead to smaller, faster memory chips than those that exist currently. The agents designed one material from scratch and identified the other from a 1999 chemistry study.

The findings are still predictions, though, and neither material has been tested in a lab. The project’s public records also show that the agents missed a 2008 study that had already hinted at the older material’s properties. Because that material has been synthesized previously, researchers can test it next by producing a new sample and measuring it.
